City’s History

The city’s garden heritage began in the 18th century by the Kings of the Mysore. Their family planted many trees and gardens across the Bengaluru region. These well-maintained green places provided cool air, clean water, and shade to its residents.

Climate

Bangalore's pleasant tropical savanna climate, characterized by a mixture of wet and dry seasons, creates the perfect environmental conditions for lush greenery.

Bengaluru underwent a remarkable transformation from barren land to a lush green city, a change of this city is deeply remembered in its history. Around 250 years ago, the city was described in some paintings as a landscape with sand and ancient strong granite rocks. The first signs of greenery in this barren terrain land were the Devarakadu (sacred groves) and village woodlots, primarily identified near Arakavati river and lakes.

Local communities and people were used these areas for religious purposes. The city’s lush greenery can also be attributed to Hyder Ali and his regime. Under his leadership, the creation of the Rose and Cypress Garden started. It is later known as Lal Bagh, which marked the beginning of a significant horticulture heritage. Hyder Ali along with his son Tipu Sultan, together cultivated this lavish garden which is believed to have sparked significant colonial interest in the region.
