India is celebrating its 76th Republic Day this year, on January 26, 2025. Preparations are underway across the country to celebrate this occasion grandly. Every year, Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 in every village across the nation. For every Indian, Republic Day is a day of pride. Just as Independence Day is celebrated with enthusiasm, Republic Day is also observed with equal fervor across the country.

Significance of January 26

While August 15, 1947, marks the day India gained independence from British rule, January 26, 1950, is the day India implemented its Constitution. It is the day India transitioned from a monarchy to a true democracy. For this reason, Republic Day holds immense significance for Indians.

During the 1929 Lahore Session of the Congress, Jawaharlal Nehru was appointed as its President. A resolution was passed declaring January 26, 1930, as the day for attaining complete independence. It was also proclaimed as Purna Swaraj Day or Independence Day. However, the goal of complete independence was not achieved until 1947. Therefore, to honor the significance of January 26, the Constitution of India was implemented on this day, and since then, Republic Day has been celebrated annually on January 26.

January 26, 1950 – Implementation of the Constitution

As India implemented its own Constitution, it became a democratic republic. A drafting committee was appointed to frame a robust Constitution for nation-building. On August 29, 1947, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar became the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution. On November 26, 1949, the Constitution was adopted, and it came into effect on January 26, 1950, with the establishment of a democratic government system. India's Constitution is a unique blend of significant aspects from the Constitutions of countries like Russia, Britain, and the United States.

First Republic Day Celebration

India’s first Republic Day was celebrated on January 26, 1950. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, hoisted the national flag at Irwin Stadium in Delhi (now renamed as Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium), followed by the singing of the national anthem. The chief guest for this historic occasion was Indonesia’s President Dr. Sukarno and his wife. About 15,000 to 20,000 people witnessed this grand event.

How is Republic Day Celebrated?

The celebrations commence with the President of India hoisting the national flag at Rajpath, followed by a grand parade. On this day, several awards like the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Ashoka Chakra, and Kirti Chakra are presented to achievers.

Magnificent Parade

Every year, Republic Day is celebrated with great pomp and show across the country. One of the main attractions of January 26 is the parade, which begins at Rajpath and proceeds to India Gate. The Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force showcase their strength and display India's cultural and social heritage. Along with this, various tableaux representing different states are showcased on Rajpath, depicting their unique culture.
